Older people are one of the least cared-for groups of people around the globe. Countries that have the highest suicide rates usually have the oldest members of their societies as the largest group of people, making up the statistics. This at-risk, disenfranchised group of people, across all races and most nationalities, face inequality at a point in their lives when they are least equipped to fight back.
To fight back, they need our students and clients to realize how their careers can help older people. For example, in the USA, the least popular medical specialty is geriatrics. More healthcare professionals are needed, such as medical doctors, social workers, and nurses.
This week in our Instagram story (Career and Livelihood on Instagram), we are focused on SDG 10, the main one to intersect the UN International Day of Older Persons. Its focus is "Reducing inequality.” More detail indicates, "Reduce inequality within and among countries." Another intersecting SDG is #3, “Good Health and Well-Being.” Its intent is as follows: “To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."
Sample Careers Include social workers, medical doctors, lawyers, nurses, nutritionists, and translators. Advocates are needed to ensure that older people receive appropriate care and job opportunities. As such, advocates have secured pledges from several companies to employ older people in the USA. These companies include Humana, Microsoft, Marriott International, and McDonald's. Jobs for Older People in the USA In Japan, more work has been done, and it identifies 40% of its companies as employers for people 70 years or older.
